Tired of wasting your money on one volume commentaries that are untrustworthy and uninformative? If you get to the point where you want a brilliant commentary set, this is the place. Don't be intimidated by the size of this: I don't read through these; I refer to them when I am stuck on a passage or want to explore a verse in depth. Luther and Calvin were the two greatest minds in Christianity. If anyone interprets a verse differently from Calvin and Luther, you can bet 99% of the time that they have drifted into heresy. This is a joy to use. Calvin has an uncanny ability to discuss all the possible interpretations of a verse and then explain clearly and convincingly what the correct one is. He inspires devotion, not dry academic analysis. For this price, an incredible value. I will be using these for the rest of my life.

I gave one each of these sets to two of my grown sons. I have an earlier version. They each were quite happy with the books and described them to me. The books do not sound unduly skimpy in paper and they were pleased with the binding. When you think about it, less than $10 a book plus a copy of the Institutes on top of that, makes for a fantastic bargain. I used super-saver shipping and that makes it even better.

Calvin's commentaries are as up to date today as they were over 400 years ago. Even for those who are not Reformed in their theology the pastoral and spiritual nature of his writing is commendable. Further, Calvin made it a point of pride to be terse. He positively despised long winded explanations and you won't find any in these works.

Great bargain, excellent library resource.

My wife owns the previous edition of The Calvin Commentaries and I think it was way better. The content is exactly the same, but the quality of the paper is definitely inferior. This is lighter paper which makes each book lighter and thinner. The previous edition had brown hard cover, this new edition is red hardcover with a seal commemorating the 500th anniversary of Calvin's birth.

This package comes with the INSTITUTES OF CHRISTIANITY. The previous edition was two volumes, this new edition is just one volume. Again the quality of the paper is inferior and also there are some editions in the content.

Overall, I am satisfied with this purchase but not as I expected.
