A compendium of 104 mammals found in the seven states of central North America since European settlement. Summaries define each species's habitat, taxonomic characteristics, breeding habits, and ecological niche, and include a range map and photograph. Opening chapters provide an information-crammed overview of this area's geology, soils, climate, vegetation, and cultural impact. This handbook's geographic restricion makes it valuable mainly to libraries within this range, although academic libraries elsewhere may find it of interest. General readers would be better served by a Peterson or Audubon field guide to mammals that covers all of North America, and is similar in arrangement and content, but less detailed.
