As a fan of all the Unleashed series of books for years, my expectations were high before i received the book in hand. I had the opportunity to review a sample chapter beforehand and once i completed it i couldn't wait to get the entire book.
Once again the Unleashed line of authors have delivered. I have followed Alex Lewis in the past via blogs, twitter and a few online columns so i have always been teased with his good writing styles, advisory notes and product reviews. This books takes industy exposure, his vast experience and practically combines a book into a:
1. How To Manual
2. Past Deployment Experience
3. Future Insight on how Lync will change UC
4. Lecture and classroom know how
The book is clearly laid out, easy to follow and obviously shows a process and line of thinking from something that has deployed Lync in complex and Enterprise environments. It is also easy to see that Alex has a tremendous amount of experience with previous versions of Microsoft UC/UM products and leverages that in his book.
I used the book to deploy a lab environment from scratch and didn't stumble as much as i thought i would because the series of steps make sense as you approach installation, deploying and configuration of Lync.
It isn't a super long read for a book covering a complex product but is concise enough to make it a good go to reference tool that belongs on your bookshelf.
I highly recommend adding it to your technical collection and i am also shelling out the extra bucks to grab the e-book so i can keep it on my Ipad (using Kindle app)
keep up the good work

Being a Unified Communications Consultant, I've read more than my fair share of technical books and documents on the subject. Lync Unleashed provides a great readable way to understand Lync Server 2010.
Lync Server 2010 is a big product, with lots of abilities and features, there is a lot to understand to get the most of of it. This book is a great way to get to grips with deployment and administration.
It's a book I will happily recommend to my customers

I just downloaded Kindle edition today, and anxiously awaiting paperback copy. This book is pretty massive and does much more than just wet your appetite for Lync Server 2010. It covers everything from planning and deployment, to monitoring and high availability. I was pleasantly surprised to even see a chapter that covered monitoring Lync with System Center Operations Manager (SCOM). If you're a new Lync administrator or a seasoned Microsoft UC veteran, this book should be part of your library. I especially like that the book includes planning in the end.
One thing to note is that the book references SQL Server 2008 R2 in several sections. At the time of this review, SQL 2008 R2 is not supported as back-end for Lync Server 2010 (SQL 2005 and SQL 2008 only). However I would expect SQL 2008 R2 to be supported in the future.
****Update on 4/25/2010****
SQL Server 2008 R2 is now officially suppored for Lync Back-End.
