This is another excellent product from DK Publishing of New York, a company known for spectacular presentations in its quality books (great graphics and how-to color illustrations), and for the qualifications of its authors. --Sacramento Bee

This is certainly not the book to carry with you into the wilderness to use as a reference. It is too big, hardbound and some of the coloured text in coloured panels would be mighty difficult to read in poor light. This is another of the recent spate of outdoor books that has been designed almost to the point of absurdity - there are text boxes within text boxes. However, the content is excellent and is arranged in a manner that is as creative as its design - but you can find what you seek using the index. Books up approach. The first section that I turn to in a survival handbook is Navigation and I see that bargain hunters will find that it is discounted now.

This book is easy o read. The graphics are excellent, and there is a bit of humor. THe skills are quite more than simple survival, they are survival with comfort.

The only down side is the book is much too massive for canoe trips or backpacking. One should read it and practice all of the skills well in advance.

This is one time where we say: " Don't leave home with it".

I have been studying survival for many years, have learned about it in the military, and have practiced it a lot in my outdoor adventures. I also have a lot of books on this topic. Rarely do I get overly excited about a particular book; this book is an exception. It is written by a British military survival expert and trainer. It contains over 300 pages of extremely well written and relevant information about surviving in any part of the world, and is very well illustrated as well. There are seven extensive and comprehensive chapters about a variety of survival topics, and some useful appendices. It covers environments all over the world, and has some very good information about psychological issues in survival situations. All I can say is that it is one of the best books I have seen in a long time and I will refer to it again and again. I would heartily recommend it to anyone.
