"Mastering Digital Photography" is a true photography book, teaching readers how to take great pictures and make great images that leverage the strengths of computer technology, while taking into account the special needs of digital cameras. Concentrating on creative photo techniques, this full-color book is not software-specific, nor does it rely on image-editing programs. This technology is getting faster, cheaper, and better. "Mastering Digital Photography" explains the convergence of conventional photography and digital photography for those who are looking to make the leap.

About the Author

Two-time Computer Press Association winner David D. Busch has been demystifying arcane computer and imaging technology for PC and Macintosh owners since the early 1980s. As a writer, photographer, and contributing editor for ten leading computer magazines, he has more than 70 books and 2500 articles to his credit. To name a few, he is the author of "Adobe Photoshop CS: Photographers' Guide" (Course Technology PTR, 1-59200-172-6), "Mastering Digital Photography" (Muska & Lipman Publishing, 1-59200-114-9), "Digital Retouching and Compositing: Photographers' Guide" (Muska & Lipman Publishing, 1-932094-19-9), and "Digital Photography Solutions" (Muska & Lipman Publishing, 1-59200-109-2). In the computer and imaging field, he’s been a contributing editor, columnist, or writer for magazines as diverse as HomePC, MacWorld, Internet World, NetGuide, Windows Magazine, Windows Sources, Computer Shopper, and many other publications. A PR consultant for Eastman Kodak Company for nearly 20 years, Busch has published photography articles under his by-line in Popular Photography and Imaging, Petersen’s PhotoGraphic, The Rangefinder, The Professional Photographer and other photo magazines. His photos have appeared on the covers of magazines, and in both print and television advertising. The graduate of Kent State University operated his own photo studio and was a principal in CCS/PR, Inc., one of the largest public relations firms based in San Diego, before becoming a full-time writer/reporter for the computer industry. A regular in many of the early computer magazines, such as Interface Age, Creative Computing, and Microcomputing, Busch launched his book-writing career in 1983 with pioneering programming books aimed at owners of Commodore, Apple, Tandy, and IBM PC computers. Indeed, his initial book was one of the first ever bundled with magnetic media—a cassette tape of his own programs.

Very nice upgrade!

I purchased this author's "Digital Photography for Dummies Desk Reference" some time back and found it to be very good. His "Mastering Digital Photography" was also available then, but I wasn't ready for it. Now I've learned quite a bit and am ready to learn more, and I was lucky enough to find this upgraded version on the shelves. It has the latest information about using the features of the newest digital cameras, including digital SLRs like my Canon Digital Rebel XT.

The author goes into quite a bit of depth on a wide selection of interesting topics. There are separate chapters on Action Photography, Portraits, Close-Up Photography, Travel Photography, Landscape and Nature Photography, and Architecture. Each of these includes "pro" tips on getting the best pictures.

It's full of beautiful photographs that illustrate each point. This is the best general digital photography book on the shelves, and believe me, I looked at them all before buying this one.

I love the friendly style and solid information in this book!

Actually, I found the friendly, conversational style in this book both disarming and fun to read. Too many digital photography books are dry and bland, and not spiced up with enough anecdotes and real world examples. Author Busch does a great job of bringing digital photography to life with this book!

I enjoyed the large chapter devoted exclusively to portrait photography, especially since it included complete lighting diagrams for the most widely-used styles of lighting. The diagrams helped me set up lights in my own home "studio" to duplicate the author's techniques exactly.

I've been disappointed in the past by digital photography books that show you how to get the looks you want in Photoshop after the shot was taken. This one skips image editing and concentrates on how to get a great picture with your camera! What a concept!
